“I paint the remembered sensation”
Susan Gottlieb is a painter and a teacher. Her artwork focuses on cross-cultural mythology and symbolism. And her fascination for ancient culture takes her to the ends of the earth. Working in acrylic, graphite and oil, her work is known for a vibrant use of color and texture. Landscapes, figures, still life, and abstractions are translated into evocative symbolic compositions.
Susan shows actively in Central and South East Pennsylvania, Charleston South Carolina, and Evergreen Colorado. Her work was included in a book on the artists of southeastern Pennsylvania, Speaking for Themselves, by Daphne Landis. She has lived and studied in Rome, Italy and continues to travel extensively. At present, she is teaching for Lancaster Country Day School. She is the resident Art Historian and instructs various studio classes. She actively guest lectures in her own school as well as local universities and institutions.
Artist Statement Goethe said, “all things are metaphors.” All things are expressions of that which is Indescribable. Crossing time and place, symbolism and mythologies attempt to bring us into harmony with that which is beyond the metaphor. Beauty lies in the variations of cultural expression.
I travel in an attempt to bring myself into relationship with those cultures similar to my own as well as to those that are very different.
My studies continue to reveal cross-cultural threads.
My paintings celebrate the variety of metaphoric expression with respect to that which underlies and connects us all.
